Mental Health First Aid has been delivered, among others, to: ABSA, Gold Fields, The South African Red Cross Society and Thokoza Youth Group.

The program has been adopted in Wales, USA, Thailand, Sweden, Singapore, Scotland, Northern Ireland, New Zealand, Nepal, Japan, Hong Kong, Finland, England, China, Canada and Cambodia.


Mental Health First Aid covers:

Introduction to mental health first aid in South Africa: mental health in South Africa; common mental health illnesses and the five step action plan for mental health first aid:

Approach the person, assess, and assist with any crisis
Listen non-judgmentally
Give support and information
Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help
Encourage other supports

First aid for developing mental health problems: Depression; Anxiety; Psychosis; Substance Use Disorder. Topics addressed are: definition, symptoms, causes, resources and five step action plan for depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use disorder.

First Aid for Mental Health Crisis: crisis first aid for suicidal thoughts, non suicidal self injury, panic attacks, traumatic events, acute pshycosis and aggressive behavior.


The training program can be delivered as:

  • Six separate modules (3h per module) delivered at a time and frequency that suits your needs, namely:
    • Introduction to Mental Health First Aid in South Africa.
    • First Aid for Depression
    • First Aid for Anxiety
    • First Aid for Psychosis
    • First Aid for Substance Use Disorder
    • First Aid for Mental Health Crisis
  • Two days training program (8h. per day, 16h. in total)

It is also possible to deliver single modules (to deliver, e.g., Modules 2 and 3 only).


The learning material consists of a manual that includes all the contents of the training program.


The complete MHFA training program costs R3100. The price includes training manual and catering. Single modules cost R680 per person. The price does not include the manual, which has an additional cost of R200.The training program is conducted in-house and at a function venue.


Participants completing the full training program (16h.) are accreditedwith 16 CPD points by the Health Professional Council of South Africa.

Participants that take single modules do not receive CPD accreditation; they receive a certificate of attendance.
